Why Movement Matters for Your Child's Developing Nervous System

Dr. Liz providing gentle chiropractic care to a baby at Mojica Chiropractic Care

Movement does much more than help a child crawl, walk, climb, or play.

Every time a child moves, sensory receptors throughout the body send information back to the nervous system. That information helps the brain understand body position, balance, pressure, movement, and the environment around them.

This is one reason movement is such an important part of childhood development.

    Movement Gives the Brain Information

We often think of the brain as telling the body what to do, but communication goes both ways.

As a child reaches, crawls, jumps, climbs, balances, or changes position, their muscles, joints, skin, and inner ear continually provide sensory information back to the nervous system.

    Two important systems involved are:

Proprioception — the body's sense of position and movement.

The vestibular system — the system that helps the brain understand balance, gravity, and movement through space.

Together with touch, vision, and other sensory systems, these inputs help children build body awareness and coordinate movement.

    Development Builds Through Experience

    Children learn movement through repetition.

They try a movement, receive sensory feedback, adjust, and try again.

Over time, these repeated experiences help the nervous system become more efficient at organizing movement.

This is why everyday activities such as floor play, crawling, climbing, swinging, jumping, pushing, pulling, and balancing can be so valuable during development.

    Movement is not simply exercise.

It is also an experience through which the nervous system learns.

    Movement and Regulation

Movement can also play an important role in regulation.

Some children constantly seek movement by jumping, climbing, spinning, crashing, or pushing into things. Others may avoid certain positions, balance activities, or unfamiliar movement.

These behaviors can sometimes give us useful information about how a child is experiencing sensory input.

    Instead of only asking:

"How do we stop this behavior?"

It may also be helpful to ask:

"What information might this child's nervous system be seeking or having difficulty organizing?"

That question allows us to look at the child more broadly.

    Where Pediatric Chiropractic Fits

At Mojica Chiropractic Care, we look closely at the relationship between movement, joint mobility, body awareness, and nervous-system function.

The joints and muscles of the spine contain sensory receptors that continually provide information related to movement and position.

Pediatric chiropractic care focuses on supporting healthy spinal and joint mobility and neuromusculoskeletal function through gentle, age-appropriate care.

Because movement provides important sensory information to the nervous system, we consider healthy mobility an important part of the physical foundation through which a child moves, explores, and interacts with the world.

Chiropractic does not treat a child's neurodevelopmental diagnosis. It can be one component of a broader whole-child approach to supporting movement, function, and nervous-system health.
