Maybe your child covers their ears when everyday sounds become overwhelming. Maybe tags, textures, clothing, brushing their hair, or certain foods lead to big reactions.

Some children become overwhelmed quickly. Others seem to need more input before their body feels organized. And sometimes, the same child can do both.

Throughout the day, a child's nervous system is constantly receiving information from their body and environment.
They hear sounds. Feel clothing against their skin. Move through space. Balance. Interact with other people. Transition between activities. Experience hunger, fatigue, excitement, frustration, and emotion.
Regulation is part of the body's ability to receive all of that information, organize a response, and adjust to what is happening.
A well-regulated child does not mean a child who is always quiet or calm. Children are supposed to play, move, explore, get excited, become frustrated, take risks, and experience emotion.
Regulation is about developing the ability to move between different states and respond appropriately to the demands of the moment.
There Are More Than Five Senses
Most of us learned about sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch. But movement and body awareness also provide important sensory information. Two systems particularly relevant to movement include:
Proprioception
Proprioception provides information about where the body and joints are positioned and how much force is being used. Activities such as:
- • Pushing
- • Pulling
- • Carrying
- • Climbing
- • Jumping
- • Crawling
- • Hanging
- • Squeezing
provide strong proprioceptive experiences.
Vestibular Input
The vestibular system provides information related to head movement, balance, and orientation in space. Children experience vestibular input through:
- • Swinging
- • Spinning
- • Running
- • Rolling
- • Jumping
- • Climbing
- • Changing head position
All of these sensory systems work together as the child moves through everyday life.

Seeks More Input
- Constantly moves

Becomes Easily Overwhelmed

- Strongly resists hair brushing or grooming

- Is highly selective about textures
- Has difficulty in crowded environments
- Becomes dysregulated during transitions
Has Difficulty Regulating
- Goes from calm to overwhelmed quickly
- Has large reactions to seemingly small events
- Takes a long time to settle
- Struggles moving from one activity to another
- Becomes more dysregulated when tired or hungry
- Has difficulty recognizing when their body needs a break
- Seems unable to "turn down" their activity level
- Has difficulty recovering after becoming upset
These behaviors can have many explanations. We are interested in understanding the pattern, not placing a label on the child.
Ask What the Body May Be Communicating
A child who repeatedly crashes into the couch may not simply be trying to misbehave. A child who covers their ears at a birthday party may not be trying to be difficult. A child who cannot sit still may not simply need more discipline.
Behavior happens for many reasons, but it can sometimes provide clues about what the child is experiencing. Instead of immediately asking:
"How do we stop this behavior?"
we may first ask:
"What is the child's nervous system trying to manage right now?"
That change in perspective can help parents begin seeing behavior as information rather than simply something that needs to be corrected.
The Brain Learns About the Body Through Experience
Movement is one of the earliest and most repeated sources of sensory information a child experiences. Every time a child:
- • Crawls
- • Rolls
- • Reaches
- • Climbs
- • Pushes
- • Pulls
- • Balances
- • Jumps
- • Carries
- • Changes position
the nervous system receives information about where the body is, how it is moving, and how much force is being used.
Through repeated experiences, children gradually build body awareness, coordination, movement planning, and increasingly complex responses to the world around them.
This is one reason movement history matters when we evaluate a child who is struggling with sensory regulation.
A Body Needs to Move Before It Can Fully Explore Movement
Before asking a child to complete more complex motor or sensory activities, we believe it makes sense to first consider whether their body can move comfortably.
Joint mobility affects the movement opportunities a child can explore. When certain areas consistently move less freely, a child may compensate by using another movement strategy. That compensation becomes part of the movement experience the nervous system repeatedly practices.

Another Piece of the Developmental Picture
Primitive reflexes are automatic movement responses that serve important roles during early infancy. As children develop greater voluntary movement and control, these early responses typically become less dominant.
When a child's developmental picture includes challenges with coordination, balance, motor planning, body awareness, movement, sensory responses, or regulation, primitive reflex patterns may be one area considered during a broader developmental assessment.
A reflex finding alone does not explain a child's behavior or diagnosis. It gives us another piece of information about the child's developmental movement history and current function.
Create Opportunities for Meaningful Movement
Children need opportunities to experience their bodies in different ways. Depending on your child's age and abilities, everyday play may include:

The goal is not to create a complicated "sensory diet" without understanding the child. It is to provide varied, developmentally appropriate movement experiences and observe what helps your child feel organized and engaged.
When more individualized strategies are needed, that is where a functional assessment becomes valuable.
When Sensory Patterns Affect Everyday Life
A child can have preferences without having a problem. Some children love loud environments. Others prefer quiet ones. Some children love spinning. Others dislike swings. Individual differences are normal.
A deeper evaluation may be worth considering when sensory or regulation patterns consistently interfere with:

- • Eating & Sleep
- • Play & Learning
- • School & Social activities
- • Family routines
- • Independence
- • Movement
- • Emotional regulation
The question is not: "Is my child sensory?" Every child processes sensory information. The better question is: "Are these patterns making everyday life harder for my child?"
When Additional Evaluation Is Important
If sensory, behavioral, developmental, communication, or movement concerns are significant or affecting multiple areas of your child's life, discuss them with your child's pediatrician as part of their ongoing developmental care.
Loss of previously acquired skills, significant weakness, major changes in behavior or function, or other new concerning symptoms deserve prompt evaluation. Our goal is to complement—not delay—appropriate developmental care when it is needed.
